Privacy Policy
1. Introduction and who we are
SpellRoo (“SpellRoo”, “we”, “our service”) is an educational spelling practice app for Australian primary and secondary students, their parents and guardians, and their teachers. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have.
We aim to follow the spirit of children’s privacy laws, education privacy regulations, and general data protection laws in the regions where our users live. Where a stricter local rule applies, that rule prevails.
2. Information we collect
- Account data: email address used to sign in, an in-app display name (a generated flower + animal combination, not your real name), year level, and avatar choice.
- Gameplay and progress data: words attempted, correct/incorrect answers, streaks, Nectar points, XP, leaderboard placements and match history.
- Device and technical data: browser or device type, operating system, approximate region derived from IP, and diagnostic logs used to fix bugs.
- Optional contact details: a parent, guardian or teacher email if the user chooses to provide one for account recovery or class use.
- Purchase records: if premium features are purchased, we keep a record of the purchase (not full payment card details).
3. How we collect information
- Directly from you when you create an account, complete onboarding, or use the app.
- Automatically as you use the app (progress events, error logs, basic device information).
- From cookies or similar technologies used to keep you signed in and to measure aggregate, anonymised usage.
4. How we use information
- Run the app and keep your account secure.
- Personalise word difficulty and adapt practice to each student’s level.
- Maintain leaderboards, streaks, badges and multiplayer Versus matches.
- Improve features, fix bugs and understand which content works best.
- Communicate service messages, and — only where permitted — occasional product updates.
- Meet legal, safety and record-keeping obligations.
5. Children’s privacy and parental/guardian involvement
SpellRoo may be used by children under 13 as well as older students. We design the app to minimise the personal data required from any child.
- We do not require a real name — the in-app display name is a randomly generated flower + animal combination.
- We do not display email addresses to other users.
- Parents, guardians or teachers can contact us to review, correct or delete a child’s account and associated data.
- Where local law requires verifiable parental consent for children under a specific age, that consent is expected before the account is used.
6. Data sharing and third parties
We do not sell personal information. We share limited information only with service providers who help us run SpellRoo, such as:
- Cloud hosting and database providers.
- Analytics providers (in aggregated or pseudonymised form).
- Payment processors, if you purchase premium features.
- Email or messaging providers used for account and support messages.
- Authorities, where we are required to by law.
7. Data retention and deletion
We keep account and progress data for as long as the account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards to support account recovery, dispute resolution and legal obligations. Diagnostic logs are kept for a short period, then deleted or anonymised.
You, your parent/guardian, or your teacher can request deletion of an account and associated personal data at any time via the contact channel below.
8. Security
We use industry-standard measures such as encryption in transit, access controls, limited staff access on a need-to-know basis, and ongoing review of our systems. No online service can be guaranteed 100% secure, but we work to reduce risk.
9. International data transfers
Our service providers may process data in countries other than the user’s home country. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps so that the data continues to be protected in line with this Policy.
10. Your rights
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct information that is wrong or out of date.
- Ask us to delete your account and associated personal data.
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
- Object to or restrict certain uses of your data.
11. Cookies and similar technologies
We use essential cookies or local storage to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. We may use limited analytics cookies to understand aggregate usage. Where local law requires, we will ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. If changes are material, we will notify users through the app or by email before the changes take effect.
13. Contact us
Questions or requests about privacy can be sent to the support contact listed inside the app. See also our Terms of Service and Refund Policy.
